This was one of those weeks where the Nostr ecosystem didn’t make a lot of noise, but the pieces kept clicking into place.
The NIP That Keeps Quietly Fixing Things
The Nostr Compass newsletter #40, published September 16, confirmed that the NIPs repository merged one pull request this week. That PR clarified NIP-A3, which covers Payment Targets. On its own, that sounds like inside baseball. But NIP-A3 is the spec that tells clients how to point at who gets paid in a transaction. As more Nostr apps bolt on zaps, Lightning addresses, and Cashu mints, getting payment targets right stops being a dev detail and starts being the difference between money landing in the right wallet or vanishing into a relay somewhere.
The newsletter also flagged that slash-command proposals and DVM-heartbeat work remain open. Translation: the community is still arguing about how bots and automated agents should behave on the protocol. That debate isn’t going away.
The Client Releases You Might Have Missed
Compass #40 wasn’t just about NIPs. It dropped a genuinely useful stack of releases.
Marmot Protocol’s MDK hit v0.10.0, adding bounded conversation windows, recovery fixes for devices that get removed and re-added, and coordinated SDK bindings across Rust, C, Swift, and Kotlin. If you’re building encrypted group chat on Nostr, that’s the toolkit getting less brittle.
Myco 0.7.0 turned its FIPS mesh into an offline napplet and file-sharing runtime. Dart NDK changed relay and cache behavior. Keycast rebuilt remote signing around durable requests. And tagged releases landed for Nail (restoring Nostr-to-email subscriptions), Nostr Mail Client, Linky (keeping recovery seeds off its server), and Boris (bounding extraction and strengthening offline reading).
None of these are flashy. All of them are the kind of plumbing that makes the protocol less annoying to actually use.
KaleidoSwap Wants Nostr to Be Bitcoin’s Discovery Layer
The more interesting story came from NostrMag, which published an article on September 15 covering KaleidoSwap’s plan to use Nostr relays as a swap discovery layer.
Here’s the problem KaleidoSwap is solving: swapping across Bitcoin layers isn’t hard because of liquidity. It’s hard because of discovery. How do you find someone offering the exact asset pair you need without a central directory that can censor you or disappear? KaleidoSwap’s answer is Nostr. Swap providers publish signed events to relays announcing their offers. Takers monitor the network, discover active providers, and verify their economic commitments before initiating a swap.
This isn’t theoretical. The Coinswap protocol already uses Nostr for Maker discovery, with Makers broadcasting Fidelity Bonds over relays. FIPS uses Nostr to resolve peer endpoints when nodes move. KaleidoSwap is applying the same pattern to multi-layer swaps across Liquid, Arkade, Taproot Assets, Spark, and RGB.
Walter Maffione, KaleidoSwap’s CEO, laid this out on the Stephan Livera Podcast. The extension derives a Nostr identity from the same BIP39 recovery phrase used for your Bitcoin accounts, and includes a NIP-07 signer for browser-based event signing. Fees are projected around 0.5 to 1 percent, with a mainnet launch path one to three months out.
I think this is the most important Nostr story of the week. Not because KaleidoSwap is guaranteed to work, but because it shows Nostr quietly becoming coordination infrastructure for Bitcoin’s multi-layer future. It’s not just a social protocol anymore.
What This Means
The through-line here is that Nostr’s value isn’t in replacing Twitter. It’s in being a censorship-resistant discovery and coordination layer that other systems can plug into. NIP-A3 getting clarified makes payments more reliable. The client releases make the experience less painful. KaleidoSwap makes the case that relays can do real economic work.
A quiet week, sure. But a productive one.
