The Human Rights Foundation just made a move that should make every freedom-loving technologist sit up and notice. Through its Bitcoin Development Fund, the NGO announced 500 million satoshis in new grants, roughly $396,854 at current prices, to 16 projects spanning Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

This isn’t charity. This is strategic infrastructure building for the most oppressed corners of the planet.


The Second Wave of a Bigger Strategy

What makes this announcement particularly telling is that it’s the second funding round of 2026. Back in April, HRF had already supported 26 projects. That’s 42 projects in just eight months. The foundation isn’t dipping its toes; it’s going all in on the idea that Bitcoin and Nostr represent the most potent tools for financial and communicative freedom since the printing press.

I think what’s easy to miss here is the geographic focus. Africa, Asia, and Latin America aren’t random picks. The Projects That Actually Matter

On the Bitcoin payments front, three projects stand out. BitSpenda is building a mobile money-to-Bitcoin bridge across Nigeria, Kenya, Cameroon, Uganda, and Ghana. It lets people send Bitcoin from a Lightning wallet directly to a mobile money account, received in local currency, no bank account required. Bitzed does something similar in Zambia, connecting mobile money networks directly to Bitcoin for users excluded from traditional banking. And Project Island Resilience builds on Flash, a wallet created by Jamaican developer Dread. After Hurricane Melissa devastated Jamaica in late 2025, the app raised and distributed over $10,000 in Bitcoin within 72 hours. Now they’re adding offline payments via Bluetooth, NFC, and ecash, creating a model for how Bitcoin can function during internet shutdowns and protests.

Nostr Gets Its Moment

But here’s where it gets really interesting for anyone following the decentralized web. Four Nostr-based projects received support: Vector, Flotilla Chat, OpenAlert, and 0xchat. These aren’t just messaging apps; they’re censorship-resistant encrypted communication tools built on a protocol that doesn’t have a central server to shut down.

Think about what that means. In countries where governments can simply flip a switch and kill WhatsApp or Telegram, Nostr-based tools keep working. They’re decentralized by design, resistant to the kind of top-down censorship that authoritarian regimes love to deploy during protests or elections.


The Bigger Picture

HRF’s funding also extends to Bitcoin development projects like Libbitcoinkernel, which pulls core security rules directly from Bitcoin’s original code and turns them into reusable modules, reducing the risk of catastrophic errors in other applications. Floresta, BDK-Dart, and WalletScrutiny round out the development side, focusing on lightweight nodes, cross-platform wallet tools, and wallet auditing respectively.

What ties all of this together is a philosophy: freedom technology needs to be built, not just theorized about. HRF isn’t funding white papers; it’s funding code that real people will use in real crises.
