My Trip to Dubai, When an Illusion Became Reality

My first trip to Dubai began with a suitcase full of prejudice. I had turned down the destination several times, convinced that “desert and skyscrapers aren’t for me". And then came that moment of stepping off the plane. Before I even had time to gather my thoughts, I found myself in a gleaming airport hall, greeted by impeccably dressed and surprisingly warm immigration officers. No crowds, no stress, just a smooth welcome — and a complimentary SIM card handed to me with a smile. My luggage arrived in record time, and I walked out of the airport faster than anywhere else in the world. I remember thinking: “Just wow.” Little did I know, that was only the beginning.

I’m writing about Dubai in the present tense because even with everything happening in the region right now, the Dubai I know still exists — in how the city operates, in its order, its ambition, and its luxury.

Before the trip, people kept telling me that Dubai is safe. I thought I knew what safety meant; I live in a safe country. But I didn’t understand that kind of safety. Dubai consistently ranks among the safest cities in the world, with extremely low crime and a sense of security that follows you everywhere, day or night. It’s a type of safety you don’t know exists until you experience it. It’s a luxury to leave your phone or wallet on a café table while you go to the restroom — and return to find it exactly where you left it.

People also said Dubai is luxurious. But no — Dubai is futurism.
The simplest way to describe it is this: Dubai is an illusion that exists. A city where more than 200 nationalities live and work together — the highest cultural mix in the world. A place where ambition is the universal language. Nowhere is that futurism more visible than in the Museum of the Future — the breathtaking architectural masterpiece often called “the most beautiful building on
Earth". Its torus-shaped structure, wrapped in Arabic calligraphy looks like a portal to another dimension. Inside, Dubai showcases its vision of tomorrow: AI, robotics, sustainability, space exploration, and technologies many countries are still only dreaming about.

The UAE invests billions each year into innovation — from autonomous mobility to smart-city systems, green energy, and hyper-advanced digital infrastructure. It’s a city that doesn’t wait for the future; it engineers it.

The pace of growth is almost surreal. On average, two to three new restaurants open every single day, bringing global culinary concepts into one place. From Michelin-starred chefs to street-food icons — everyone wants to be in Dubai. Every famous restaurant from London, New York, or Madrid has a branch here.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum runs the country like a global corporation — with a clear mission, vision, strategy, and flawless execution. The result is a place where young people come to build their future, where even Gen Z carries ambition, and where
being a successful businessperson almost seems incomplete without having a presence here. It’s a city where anything you want is available at any moment. A perfectly functioning illusion.

And that’s why I return every year — to feel that illusion for a few days, to recharge in a world of order, cleanliness, turquoise water, and white sand, and to remind myself that such a place can exist.
Today, however, the region faces what many analysts call an exhausting drone war, and yet, the leadership remains remarkably composed. Authorities communicate calmly, transparently, and factually, providing the public with clear updates. Like a global corporation, the state operates with a level of discipline and communication that resembles world-class marketing.

Life continues with dignity, order, and an almost surreal normalcy and luxury. I refuse to believe the illusion will disappear. In my imagination, Dubai will soon invent a 3D shield to protect the illusion from reality. If any place can, it’s this one. If there is a city capable of preserving its vision against all odds, it’s Dubai — a place where ambition becomes architecture, where cultures blend effortlessly, and where an illusion can be real.
