Nostr Decoded

The Protocol, Clients, and Your 2026 Starter Kit

Nostr’s brilliance lies in its simplicity. At its core, it’s just two things:

. Clients (the apps you use to access the social network, like Facebook app, but Nostr app, being open source and decentralized, there are many developers working on their own clients and competing for market adoption).

.Relays (the servers that pass messages around globally distributed). You create a single, portable identity with a public key (called npub) and a private key (called nsec). You then use any client to post notes with images or videos, which are sent to the relays you choose.

Anyone following you can fetch your notes from those relays. No registration, no boss, no lock in, and you get more than simple feeds with notes, the feeds are rich with media content, same as in all centralized non trusted social networks, you get private messages as well encrypted end to end, the cherry on top, you are uncensorable… Yes, you read that well, you can’t be censored, the magic of decentralized networks that respect freedom of speech and self governance.

Most Relays are, for now, offered free, but you can choose to pay for some in exchange for filtering services, those servers will filter out most spam and most undesired content, but, if you are a libertarian, the “all is accepted” type, I do my own filtering, well, you neither need to choose a server filtering, you can be your own filter and block and mute, like an adult, what you do not want to see. The development community is divided, most leaned towards paid relays with filters, they are worried about ill intended spam and therefore they are working on creating a WOT like (web of trust) in new proposals and improving filtering and algorithms to improve the user experience, in this case the non pure libertarian user experience.

Choosing the right client is your first major decision. Here’s how the top contenders stack up in early 2026:

Rank Client (Platform) Pros Cons
1 Amethyst (Android) Highly customizable, decent performance, open source. A feast of features, from TOR native support to TikTok like feeds. Android only. No wallet built in.
2 Damus (iOS) Sleek native feel, robust feature set, strong adoption. Includes Nostr Wallet with LN Support. iOS-only.
3 Yakihonne (Android & iOS & Web support) An excellent client well curated  on the web front, an excellent choice, it includes a wallet as well. A bit slow on the browser
4 0xChat (Android & iOS) Highly customizable, excellent performance, open-source. Focuses on Chat and voice, includes native nostr wallet, supports cashu and LN, just awesome. Less focus on the feed and media, as its name clearly describe the app, it is designed for chat more than anything

Our recommendation? Start with Damus on iOS or Amethyst on Android for the best native experience. For a quick, cross-platform trial, Yakihonne is your best bet and if you are mainly into chats and voice 0xChat is the one for you.

Dive in, follow some interesting npubs (start with ours: npub1h3vt2v0tu82tvzy76dr0hkuy6q8medsecfkmducr7ll6fd8ykkmsrdncq5), and experience a social network that you truly own. We have as well a human readable address: nostrmagazine@npub.cash, which you can use in the search box to find us if you prefer.

SUMMARY: The Nostr protocol uses a decentralized model of clients and relays. For beginners in 2026, Damus (iOS) and Amethyst (Android) lead in adoption and user experience, while web clients like Yakihonne offer easy accessibility.
